Panda in Berlin celebrates its 9th birthday with a special cake
"Jiao Qing" kept staring at the ice-cream cake given by zookeepers. The cake was made with beetroot and sweet potato, and topped with carved candles made out of bamboo and carrots. He and another panda named "Meng Meng" are seen as the superstars of the zoo. They consume an average of 641 kilograms of bamboo a week, a total of 31 tons a year.

The pair was leased to Germany for fifteen years starting from 2017. Berlin Zoo drew 3.5 million visitors from Germany and around the world last year.

The giant panda, also known as panda bear or simply panda, is a bear native to south central China. It is easily recognized by the large, distinctive black patches around its eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. The name "giant panda" is sometimes used to distinguish it from the red panda.
