The Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States

The Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States accepts nominations for the Churchill Scholarship from a limited number of Participating Institutions. If you are interested in applying, you should first contact the scholarship office at your undergraduate institution. Each institution will have an internal application deadline some weeks in advance of the Foundation nomination deadline. The next nomination deadline for the Churchill Scholarship is:

October 31, 2019

Application process

These instructions are for the 15 Churchill Scholarships available in science, mathematics, and engineering. Applicants for the Kanders Churchill Scholarship simply apply to the Master's in Public Policy at the University of Cambridge and indicate that you would like to be considered for that award. Applications for the Churchill Scholarship are reviewed by a Selection Committee comprised of eight former Churchill Scholars from a variety of STEM disciplines. An offer cannot be made before completion of an informal telephone interview.

Criteria for selection

Outstanding academic achievement. There is no minimum GPA, though most applicants have a very high average. The Committee looks at achievement in STEM courses, especially in the major, as indicated by course grades and recommendation letters.

Proven talent in research. Applicants in the sciences and engineering will demonstrate extensive laboratory experience, internships, or other related work, while applicants in mathematics will show substantial independent work or other projects. The Committee looks for originality and creativity.

Outstanding personal qualities. Understanding the time commitment required by research, the Churchill Foundation does not seek so-called “well-rounded” applicants; instead, it seeks applicants with what we call interesting “jagged edges.” The Committee takes into account interests and achievements outside of research, but it does not favor any particular kind of activity.

CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Awards

The Program.  This award program recognizes undergraduate students in North American colleges and universities who show outstanding potential in an area of computing research.  The award is primarily about research. While it is expected that successful nominees will have excellent academic records and will have engaged in some form of service (e.g., club leadership, teaching, peer tutoring), excellence in research is the primary consideration.

Eligibility.  Students enrolled as undergraduates in North American colleges or universities in Fall 2019 are eligible.   On the nomination form, the electronic signature of the chair/head of the home department confirms that the nominee is in good standing and eligible for the award.

Number of Nominees Per Department.  Departments that grant Ph.D.s in a computing field may nominate up to four students per year.  Departments that do not grant Ph.D.s in a computing field may nominate up to two students per year.

2019/20 Deadline: Friday, October 18, 2019

The Science Ambassador Scholarship

Applications for the 2020 academic year open this fall. To apply, film a three–minute video of yourself explaining a STEM topic you're passionate about. You must be a high school senior or an undergraduate college student to apply. To view examples of previous application videos, click here. Your video should be:

A mini–lecture, not a personal statement. Pretend you're a lecturer speaking to a class. Teach us something.
Clear, creative, accurate, and a demonstration of your passion for the subject. Your video doesn't need to be fancy or high–tech. Production value is not a factor.
Three minutes or less in length.
About any STEM topic, not necessarily your field of study.
Uploaded to YouTube and marked ‘public.’ It should be accessible to the general public and could, but doesn't have to be, targeted at young students.

You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to apply. You do need to attend college (or plan to attend college) in the United States.
