The Most Famous Sports Stars You'll Find on the Casino Floor

There's a lot of crossover between the mindset of sporting stars and professional gamers. Take risks, work the odds, play hard, and play to win. So, it's not surprising then that some of the biggest sports stars in the world can be found on the casino floor.

In this article, we'll be looking at some of the most famous names in sport that you might run into at your local casino.

Floyd "Money" Mayweather

Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr might have made a name for himself in the ring, winning fifteen major world titles in five weight classes and topping it off with an Olympic bronze medal, but he got his famous nickname from his love of casinos.

Mayweather grew up in Las Vegas, so it's no real surprise that he can often be found on the pit floor mingling with other players at some of the most famous casinos in the U.S and enjoying historic table games like roulette, which is French for 'little wheel' (makes sense right!?).

Mayweather is also famous for betting on himself for his fight with MMA celebrity Conor Mcgregor, apparently to the tune of $5 million, and for entering into major casino blackjack tournaments.

Not content with just playing in blackjack tournaments, Mayweather also hosts his own in the Bahamas' sunny climes with a three hundred thousand dollar top prize.

Mayweather brought home the money during his career just as fast as he spent it. Ranked by ESPN as the best pound for pound boxer in the last 25 years, Mayweather brought in five of Nevada boxing history's six largest gate fees. His largest being the historic $72 million fight against another boxing legend, Manny Pacquiao.

Wayne Rooney

England Manchester United and Everton star Wayne Rooney is ranked as one of the world's richest football players. Having moved away from actually playing himself, Rooney is now the manager of Championship club Derby County where he was the former player/manager.

Now a little removed from the excitement of actually being on the pitch, Rooney is well known for his love of frequenting local casinos. His reputation as a superstar celebrity who could be found mingling with other casino-goers started during his time at Manchester United.

Having moved on from the Everton team that he joined at the age of just nine years old, Rooney signed for Manchester United for £25.6 million in 2004. Rooney was a regular sight at local Manchester casinos, where he favoured blackjack and roulette.

Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli is a man with a reputation for being, shall we say eccentric. Balotelli has garnered attention for odd stunts like staging a swordfight with rolling pins taken from a curry house, and driving around with $25,000 in the front seat of his car because in his words "I can."

To be fair to Balotelli, he is also famous for his abilities on the pitch as well. While many coaches have obviously regarded him as a loose cannon, he is currently Italy's top-scorer in both the UEFA European Championship and FIFA Confederations Cup having scored 14 goals for his country.

His club career is equally impressive, having played for footballing giants like Inter Milan, Manchester City, Milan, Liverpool, and Nice. However, he once needed a Manchester City steward's assistance to get put on a training bib after struggling to get it on for over a minute.

Like Wayne Rooney, Balotelli was a regular face around Manchester's casino scene during his time at the club. However, he celebrated his winnings in a far more flashy manner.

Having won £25,000 during a winning streak one night, Balotelli was caught on camera peeling off a cool £1000 and giving it to a local homeless man.

He was also rumoured to have been seen driving around Manchester dressed as Santa Claus and giving away money. While there was no actual evidence of this, given his penchant for giving away cash and driving around with it, it might very well have happened.
